Newborn Session Prep Guide
When to Schedule?
We know babies will come when they are ready, so time and dated can be very unpredictable. The best recommended time to scheduling your newborn session about 7-8 months in your pregnancy. Go ahead and schedule a tentative date, well get you booked and can always reschedule if little one comes to early. Then once baby is here we can change if needed. I would like the baby to be at least 2 weeks old, so their immune system can start working. Baby should be 14 days to 21 days old.
What to do before coming to the Studio?
This is where 80% of the prep happens, is before you come into the studio! I will split this into a few sections/almost all of the prep happens so we will do this in a few sections.
- Baby Prep
- sibling Prep
- Momma Prep
- Daddy Prep
Baby Prep
Most of these steps are crucial to having a successful photoshoot with a newborn.
- Try and Keep baby awake for 2 -3 hours before the session. This will ensure baby is nice and tired for the session and can get all the adorable photos we want. if the baby isn't awake 2-3 hours before your session it may render the amount of photos and props we can use.
- If you live more than 30 minutes from the studio please make sure the baby is fully fed before your session. If we need to stop and have baby feed that is perfectly fine, however it will go into the session time frame.
- Make sure baby is free of gunk (eye corners, milk crusties around the mouth all the gunks.
- this part is imperative, please lotion baby up so their skin is nice and buttery looking.
Sibling Prep
If we have siblings joining us then they need a prep guide as well!
- Please make sure they are well rested, as we want all those adorable family photos.
- Please make sure their faces are clean, before the session check that their face is clean from snacks and dirt. (additional editing charges may apply if they are not) Also clean hands, they may be touching baby and their hands will show.
- What to wear? I would recommend a simple white or cream color button up, polo and Khakis or jeans for boys. We just want to make sure there areno bright colors and more of a light and muted colors.
- Shoes? Shoes are not necessary. However, if you need a recommendation, anything to go with there out fits or a beige shoe.
- You are more than welcomed to bring them some entertainment - tablet, toys..etc while we work on photos for baby. Please no food or drinks in the studio.
Momma Prep
- if your breastfeeding avoid caffeine and anything spicy the day of and night before your session. What you eat will affect baby during the session through milk. So avoid anything that may cause baby gas or discomfort.
- cream or white color, we don't want anything too bright. You may want to bring an extra shirt incase baby needs feed and makes a mess.
- nails, we want them nice and clean and unchipped.
- avoid bright and bold colors in your makeup- keep it neutral.
- if you are breastfeeding, I will have a seat for you to feed baby, if you want to cover completely up to you!
- make sure your wrist are free from hair ties, pocket free of phones, anything you don't want in your photos.
Daddy Prep
- dad needs to also be in a solid color shirt. patterns are very busy and take away from the baby.
- clean face and hands
- clear all things you don't want in the photos, anything from the wrist like smart watch, pockets such as phones, hats, sunglasses..ect.
